9 December 2021: Jonathan presented on ‘COVID lockdowns as a career interruption’ at the Australia and New Zealand Society of Immunology (ASI) conference.

18 November 2021: With our colleagues Inger Mewburn (Thesis Whisperer) and Narelle Lemon (Wellbeing Whisperer), we launched our new  Whisper Collective portal. The launch event included a keynote by Mark Carrigan (speaking on the post pandemic university).

18 June 2021: Tseen co-presented a keynote with her RED colleague Jamie Burford at the #usqPGECR symposium. They talked about “The Portable Researcher Self”, a presentation focused on what defines a scholarly self.

28 May 2021: Tseen presented a keynote on “Using social media to expand your research network and impact” for #DocFest21 (26-28 May) at Charles Sturt University.

27 May 2021: Tseen presented ‘5 rules of grant club’ to University of Roehampton (UK) researchers – thanks for the invitation, Melissa Jogie!

28 Feb 2021: Jonathan gave a ‘Sharpen up your grant application’ workshop to the Professional Historians Association (Victoria and Tasmania). He then wrote a blogpost about it: Sharpen up your application

27 January 2021: Tseen facilitated a half-day workshop on “Growing a community on social media” for the Okinawan Institute of Science and Technology (OIST). She even blogged about it!

2020

30 November 2020: Jonathan gave a talk at the Australasian Research Management Society (ARMS) online conference on “Micro-patronage – Funding research engagement, one dollar at a time”.

23-26 November 2020: Jonathan and Tseen convened a 4-day researcher development event, #Whisperfest, with their colleagues Inger Mewburn (Thesis Whisperer) and Narelle Lemon (Welllbeing Whisperer).

12 November 2020: Jonathan gave a talk on “Finding Funding” for the Florey Institute.

29 October 2020: Jonathan gave a talk about “Building a narrative around your research” for the Australasian Early Career Urban Research Network (AECURN). A recording of his talk can be accessed here.

15 October 2020: Tseen co-presented “Negotiating personal and professional spaces online” with Erika Smith for Mont Royal University.

11 August 2020: Tseen was an invited speaker on a “Pivoting between Academia and Industry” panel for the Council of Academic Public Health Institutions Australasia (CAPHIA).

10 June 2020: Jonathan gave a talk on “Crowdfunding as a path to engagement” for the University of Melbourne symposium on the Engaged University.

14 May 2020: With her RED (Research Education and Development) team colleagues, Tseen presented to the Australian Council of Graduate Research (ACGR) on “Virtual graduate research communities”.

29 April 2020: We were very happy to do a Tweetchat for Virtual Not Viral on “Working from home” (Part 1, Part 2 & Part 3).

2019

1 November 2019: In collaboration with Contemporary Art and Social Transformation (CAST) at RMIT University, Jonathan was part of an all-day seminar on Art and the ARC. This will happen in conjunction with the 2019 Australian Council of University Art and Design Schools (ACUADS) conference.

30 August 2019: Tseen and Jonathan were part of the CHASS ECR Careers Day hosted by the University of South Australia. Tseen will talk about researchers’ digital identities, and Jonathan on research funding and getting grants.

4 July 2019: Tseen and Jonathan presented on “How to be a researcher while casual” at the NTEU Victoria Professional Development Day for casual academics.

21 June 2019: Jonathan was part of a pitch panel for research projects at Melbourne Polytechnic.

23 October 2017: Jonathan presented the Real Faces of White Australia project for Open Access Week, at La Trobe, Bundoora.

24 September 2017: Jonathan spoke to Australian Political Studies early career researchers about how to explain their research methods to funders.

15 September 2017: Tseen hosted the 2017 Whisper Workshop at La Trobe University’s fabulous Melbourne city campus. Jonathan will be Master of Ceremonies for the day.

17 August 2017: Jonathan and Tseen presented at the Council for the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (CHASS) early career researcher event at RMIT, Melbourne.

23 June 2017: Tseen and Jonathan presented at New Directions in Screen Studies II. We talked with early career researchers about what researchers need. Thanks, Kate.

31 May 2017: Tseen has worked with the Australian Academy of the Humanities on the pilot ECR development program that runs on this day. She can testify that the AAH Secretariat is staffed with only the most fabulous people. Melbourne.

28 November 2016: Together we joined Professor Heaven and others to judge the Speed Dating for Sociology Researchers event at the Australian Sociological Conference (TASA 2016). Thanks TASA and Council for the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (CHASS) for inviting us.

26 September – 7 October: International tour! Jonathan was at NorthWestern University in the USA. Very exciting! Thanks to the Australasian Research Management Society (ARMS) and the National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA) for their ARMS-NCURA fellowship that made this possible.

11 – 15 September 2016: Jonathan and Tseen presented at INORMS 2016. This was a big, scary thing for us because INORMS is the International Network of Research Management Societies. All the research whisperers in the world in one place!

• Tseen (with her La Trobe colleague, Jason Murphy) presented on building online research communities for graduate researchers.

2012

20 September 2012: Tseen and Jonathan presented ‘The Research Whisperer: Research development & social media’, at Australasian Research Management Society (ARMS) annual conference, Technology and collaboration track, ARMS 2012, Gold Coast. We spoke about the development of the blog and Twitter stream, and what we were hoping to achieve. This is as close as we get to a manifesto.

2011
